Arts industries threatened by Sydney’s real-estate boom

More than 60 per cent of all manufacturing jobs in Sydney are with cultural and creative industries such as theatre production and clothing design, according to report funded by the Australian Research Council.

But it warns that major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne risk losing the vibrant arts precincts that are a major part of their cultural identity as city councils step up plans to convert land for high-density housing developments.

The report is part of an ARC-funded study to investigate the relationship between creative industries such as fashion, film studios and publishing to future urban growth and employment.
