Changes to global shipping routes are needed to prevent humpback whales and whale sharks from becoming “marine roadkill”, according to a study by two Australian universities.
The study uses road management ecology to assess threats to marine wildlife such as ship strikes, underwater noise from increased shipping traffic, chemical pollution and oil spills.
It was led by Vanessa Pirotta, a marine biology PhD candidate at Macquarie University in Sydney, and involved scientists from James Cook University in north Queensland.
