Funding shake up aims to make research pay its way

The Abbott government wants to overhaul Australia’s competitive research grants programmes to place more emphasis on business experience, industry relevance and commercial success.

The proposed changes are outlined in a discussion paper launched in Canberra on 29 October by federal industry minister Ian Macfarlane and education minister Christopher Pyne.

The paper suggests the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council “could be required to recognise industry experience” when allocating grants to universities.
