Frydenberg blasts Japan over whaling ‘research’

Australia’s environment minister Josh Frydenberg has condemned Japan’s decision to resume killing whales in the northern Pacific Ocean as part of its “scientific” whaling research programme.

In a ministerial statement on 20 July, Frydenberg said that Australia was “deeply disappointed” by Japan’s failure to respect the authority and scientific expertise of the International Whaling Commission.

He said the decision ignored “the clear and unambiguous conclusions” of the IWC’s review in 2015 and 2017 that found Japan had not demonstrated the scientific need to kill whales for research.
