University tutors have been dropped from a list of skilled occupations eligible for temporary visas in a new round of changes to Australia’s migration laws.
But vice-chancellors, medical researchers, mining engineers and university lecturers have had their visa status restored. They are among 36 occupations that have been re-instated as eligible to apply for visas.
Criminal checks are now mandatory, and the exemption from English language testing for visa applicants with a salary over $96,000 has also been scrapped. The skilled occupation list will also be reviewed regularly to ensure it reflects skills shortages.
