Grants system offers ‘little support’ for aged care research

Australia’s medical research grants system needs to be overhauled to provide more “dedicated and specific” support for aged care and gerontology research, a Senate inquiry has heard.

Monash University medical researchers Joseph Ibrahim and Lyndal Bugeja say that Australia also currently lacks relevant tertiary courses to train highly skilled aged care nurses.

In a hard-hitting submission to a federal inquiry into Australia’s aged care system, Ibrahim and Bugeja have called for federal policies that will support “complex” and long-term research into aged care.
