Expert group wants more federal funding for rural research

Australia’s rural universities need government support to strengthen their research capacities and drive growth in skilled jobs in regional areas, a federal draft policy paper has said.

The paper also suggests that global university rankings “are not a reliable indicator” of an institution’s ability to meet the financial and social challenges faced by rural students.

“For students who relocate to attend university, the associated living costs can double the cost of a higher education degree,” the paper says.
