Labor promises extra funding for juvenile diabetes research

Federal opposition leader Bill Shorten has promised a $50-million boost for research to find a cure for type 1 diabetes affecting children if Labor wins government in the 2019 federal election.

Announcing the funding increase in Melbourne on 13 January, Shorten said that in its first budget, Labor would increase federal support for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to “take research where it’s needed most” for children with diabetes.

“Australian scientists and researchers punch above their weight. We do better at medical research when they get the help they need,” he said.
