Journalism academics ‘not covered by media protection laws’

Rules on free expression and free media should be extended, inquiry told

Laws protecting Australia’s journalists must be upgraded to include academic research papers and blogs that are “public interest journalism”, a Senate inquiry into press freedom has been told.

In its submission, the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia calls for existing and proposed protections for ‘journalists and media organisations’ to be extended to apply to research by journalism academics and their students.
