Australian academies raise further concerns over proposal affecting science collaboration

New defence controls could lead to the criminalisation of normal research activities and self-censorship by scientists, two Australian academies have warned.

The Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering lodged a joint submission on proposed changes to the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Bill on 17 November, warning that extensions to its power after it is passed could “occur without consultation or scrutiny” and subvert the law.
