Wellcome Trust funds cancer drugs development

A team of scientists from Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Monash University and New Zealand’s University of Auckland have received almost AU$7 million in funding from the UK’s Wellcome Trust to develop suppressive cancer drugs.

The Seeding Drug Discovery Award will support researchers’ efforts to develop a class of immune-suppressive drugs, which aim to protect bone marrow stem cell transplants in cancer patients.

The team aims to progress to clinical trials by 2016, if milestones under the funding agreement are met, Monash University said on 6 June.
