Carr quits politics to become Asia scholar

Former foreign minister, Senator Bob Carr, has resigned from parliament to take up two part-time academic posts in Sydney.

Carr will become a professorial fellow at Sydney University’s Southeast Asia Centre and also an adjunct professor at the University of New South Wales, where he studied history and graduated with honours.

Announcing his resignation at a press conference in Canberra on 23 October, Carr joked that he did not intend to become “a full time commentator on the Labor party” in retirement. “I’m going to reinvent myself as an expert on Asia,” he said.
