Sydney appoints insurance company chair as new chancellor

The university of Sydney has appointed Belinda Hutchinson as its 18th chancellor.

A Sydney graduate, Hutchinson is Chairman of QBE Insurance Group, director of a number or organisations including St Vincent’s Health Australia and AGL Energy, and a member of the Federal Government Financial Services Advisory Council.

“I feel honoured and privileged to be elected as chancellor of the University of Sydney which has always been a leader in education and research,” said Hutchinson in a statement on 5 February.

“I am excited by the opportunity to work with the whole university community as we strive to achieve excellence in educational and research outcomes,” she added.

Hutchinson takes over from Marie Bashir, the governor of NSW, who was chancellor of the university for two terms from 2007 to December 2012.
