Chinese diplomats urge swift action after baseball-bat attack

The Chinese embassy in Australia has called on the federal government to protect “the personal safety and legitimate rights” of Chinese students, after several were injured in an attack at the Australian National University in Canberra.

An 18-year old male student took a baseball bat into a statistics tutorial on 25 August, assaulting a female lecturer and injuring three Chinese students who tried to stop the attack.

The man was restrained by ANU campus security until police arrived and has subsequently been charged with seven counts of assault following the incident.
