Queensland’s deforestation laws are not working, study shows

State conservation laws are failing to protect Queensland’s forests from being cleared for urban development, agriculture and infrastructure, a University of Queensland study has found.

The state’s vegetation management laws and conservation policies have had minimal impact in reducing deforestation in critical habitat areas for wildlife, the study found.

It follows a Queensland government report that said 80 per cent of koala habitat in the state’s south had been cleared for roads and housing developments.
