Six MEPs have urged the European Commission not to fund embryonic stem cell research under the next funding programme Horizon 2020.
“EU funding of scientific research with human embryonic stem cells would be legally contestable,” MEPs said in a statement released on 23 November, referring to the European Court of Justice’s decision last month that these cells cannot be patented in Europe. “It seems to be likely that the Court will declare legal acts providing for the promotion of stem cell research to be void.”
