Switzerland has set up two five-year research programmes with Romania and Bulgaria, worth a combined €12 million (CHF 15.58m). Switzerland will pay 85 per cent of the cost, while Romania and Bulgaria pay a 15 per cent share of their respective programmes.
The schemes are part of a €1-billion contribution from Switzerland to the 12 countries that entered the EU in 2004 and 2007. The beneficiaries can choose in which areas of collaboration they would like to use this money. Romania and Bulgaria chose research, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation asked the Swiss National Science Foundation to run this cooperation.
