The parliament of the Flemish region in Belgium is to close down its science advice centre, the Institute Society and Technology, by 1 January 2013.
The institute has been providing research-based advice to members of the Flemish parliament since 2001 on issues ranging from cyberharassment to biotechnology and energy use. But on 24 October, the parliament decided that this advisory role will be integrated into other services or transferred to a Flemish administrative body. All research activities will be stopped.
