The International Maritime Organization has issued binding targets to reduce CO2 emissions from ships, aiming for 25-30 per cent reductions by 2030, compared to what would happen if nothing was done.
On 18 July Connie Hedegaard, the climate change commissioner, congratulated the IMO for pushing through the targets, which introduce minimum energy efficiency levels for different ship types. However, the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index will cover only newly-constructed ships.
