A group of NGOs and scientists’ organisations say the European Commission’s plans for the next Framework Programme are biased towards commercial interests and neglect the needs of citizens. In an open letter sent on 29 June, the signatories urge the Commission, the European Parliament and national governments to overcome what they call ‘the myth’ that only highly complex technology can create sustainability. The letter suggests the EU should instead adopt a wide definition of innovation, more relevant to local and social needs.
