Commission urges Italy to comply with generic drugs law

The European Commission has requested that Italy complies with EU legislation on marketing procedures for generic drugs.

Generic drugs are modelled on branded drugs, and have the same effect as the original product. According to EU law, manufacturers of generic drugs cannot market their product before the patent for the original product has expired, but they can apply for marketing authorisation before that date.
