European Parliament chooses Germany’s Martin Schulz as president

Martin Schulz, an MEP from Germany and leader of the European Parliament’s Socialists and Democrats group, has been elected president of the European Parliament.

Schulz, who was elected with 387 votes, defeated Nirj Deva, a UK MEP from the European Conservatives and Reformists group and the UK MEP Diana Wallis from the Liberals & Democrats group. Deva received 142 votes and Wallis attracted 141 votes.
