Rules for member states’ aid to R&D reviewed

The European Commission is to review its state-aid rules for research, development and innovation. State aid is defined as public money used by member states to help businesses become more competitive. Under EU law, state aid can only be given in special circumstances. However, the rules have previously been criticised for being obscure and biased against smaller and poorer member states. The consultation will run until 24 February, and invites comment from public authorities, citizens, companies and other organisations.
