European Commission plans to monitor shipping emissions

The European Commission has announced plans to launch a monitoring system early next year, as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

In a joint statement published on 1 October, the commissioner for transport, Siim Kallas, and the commissioner for climate action, Connie Hedegaard, said that a system for reporting emissions based on fuel consumption is the “necessary starting point” towards a global reduction in ship pollution.
