European regulatory agencies ‘fail’ on handling conflicts of interest

Four agencies dealing with health and safety have failed to adequately manage conflict of interest situations in the recent past, according to an assessment by the European Court of Auditors.

The court looked into the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) following allegations they had failed to deal appropriately with conflicts of interest amongst employees and external experts that included close ties with industry.
