Commission wants stronger role in Arctic

The European Commission wants to increase its involvement in the Arctic region, in particular through scientific research.

In a communication released on 3 July, the Commission presented its plans for the region, after the EU officially applied for permanent observer status at the Arctic Council last year. The Commission says that it is possible to reap economic benefits by making greater use of the Arctic, from transport, trade, fisheries, oil and gas drilling, while preserving the environment.
