The European Patent Office’s Economic and Scientific Advisory Board met in Leuven, Belgium yesterday for a workshop on ‘patent thickets’ — the phenomenon of numerous, overlapping international property rights that can stop companies from bringing new technologies to market.
Economists, legal experts, and industry representatives were present to discuss when such thickets pose a problem, how companies can deal with them, and how patent legislation can be changed to prevent IP rights from becoming excessively complex.
