Global monitoring programme expectations fall

Europe’s Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme, which uses satellites and other sensors to monitor and forecast behaviour on Earth and in our atmosphere, is expected to receive less funding than had been anticipated, Space News reports.

Jean-Paul Malingreau, adviser for scientific foresight and policy anticipation to the director-general of the European Commission’s Joint Research Center, reportedly said that the GMES programme is unlikely to receive funding at the level initially expected, and that satellites should no longer be the focus of observation efforts.
