Green light for laser facility in Romania

The European Commission has approved €180 million of investment to develop a laser light source in Romania, as part a wider initiative called the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) project.

The facility in Romania will combine a particle accelerator with a high-power laser, to create a gamma-ray source for researchers in a range of disciplines including fundamental and nuclear physics, materials science and biology.

The site is set to be one of four across Eastern Europe that make up the ELI project, which will build and utilize large lasers.
