EU and US move to align patent classification

The European Patent Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office have launched a Cooperative Patent Classification scheme to coordinate the classification of patent publications and other technical documents. The system combines aspects of the classification systems from the EU and US. According to a 2 January statement from the EPO, the system will make it possible for patent users and examiners to search for existing patents more efficiently.
