EU food agency moves to increase openness

The European Food Safety Authority intends to increase the transparency of its work by making scientific data more freely available to researchers and the public.

On 14 January, EFSA announced the launch of an internal review to consider how, in what form and to what extent data from risk assessments of foods, including genetically modified crops, can be made public. Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, the agency’s executive director, said publishing data would enable researchers to fill gaps in the literature on food safety.
