Bye bye Britain

On a recent visit to Brussels, within a week of UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech on a referendum on EU membership, we heard some interesting perspectives on Britain. First, a German MEP announced that he was going to speak in English because it might be one of his last opportunities to use it as an official EU language. Later, a Spanish official proclaimed he must speak first in French to discuss industrial policy after which he would revert to English to discuss money. The final nail? A British MEP was silenced with the retort that at least there will be more money for everyone else when Britain leaves.
