ERC proposals up 11 per cent
The European Research Council funded 870 projects in 2012, according to its annual report. A total of 7,045 proposals were received—an increase of 11 per cent compared with 2011. The ERC, which funds basic research with European Commission money, spent a total of €1.5 billion on funding individual researchers undertaking ‘blue sky’ projects in 2012, the report said. Choosing these projects involved more than 5,000 external reviewers.
