Ministers give thumbs up to cities innovation partnership

National environment ministers have endorsed the creation of a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on “smart cities and communities”.

At a Council of Ministers meeting held in Brussels on 21 March, ministers said they support the European Commission’s proposal to launch the partnership this semester, by setting up a so-called “high-level group” and “stakeholder platform” as well as defining an implementation plan.

The smart cities partnership is one of several EIPs designed to speed up innovation by aligning efforts and gathering funding from public and private bodies across Europe. As ministers recalled in their meeting conclusions, EIPs do not receive fresh financial contributions, nor will they manage funds.
