Patent process needs improvement, says advisory board

Problems with the European patenting process are holding back innovation, warns the European Patent Office’s Economic and Scientific Advisory Board. The pre-granting stage needs to conclude more quickly, and procedures for opposition and re-examination should be streamlined more effectively. Better communication between offices and reducing the cost of litigation would also improve patent quality, the board said in a position paper.
