A changing Europe

As Research Europe goes fully digital, we look back through the archive at some of the policy issues that have made headlines in print down the years.

In November 1996, the first issue of this magazine appeared. It—and the world around it—looked very different.

The cover article was about a push by research commissioner Edith Cresson for spending, with the currency in question ecus, rather than euros. The 100 million ecus at stake were for the Framework 4 programme, for tackling a problem high on the public agenda at the time: bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease.
