Error rate in programme payments rises

There was a 3.9 per cent error rate in research programme payments last year, according to the European Court of Auditors’ report on the 2012 EU budget.

This is greater than both last year’s error rate of 3 per cent and the acceptable threshold error rate, set by the ECA at 2 per cent.

The annual report, published on 5 November, says that of 150 projects audited, 49 per cent were affected by errors. The ECA said in a statement that this means that funds have been paid out when they should not have been, but the percentage rates are not a measure of fraud or waste.
