European data infrastructure connects with supercomputer in Japan

A network for high-speed data transmission is enabling European researchers to connect with a supercomputer at the Japan-based International Fusion Energy Research Centre.

The network, known as GÉANT, has created a high-speed data connection between researchers working on the EU’s Iter and Demo fusion projects and the Helios supercomputer, which is based at Japan’s IFERC and operated by French organisations.

The GÉANT connection to Japan will work via a high-speed link from Geneva to Washington, United States. Another connection, provided by Japan’s SINET network, then links Washington and Japan, enabling European researchers to access Japanese data.
