France’s government unlocks €20bn for campus renovations

The Ministry for Higher Education and Research has signed a deal with the Caisse des Dépôts, which safeguards public funds, to invest in university campus renovations in France.

The deal follows the decision to allow universities selected for billions of euros in funding over the past few years to go ahead with major works without involving a business partner. The previous government made public/private partnerships a condition of funding under its Operation Campus renovations programme.

The Campus of the Future deal is set to last between 2013 and 2018 and will allow universities to apply for funding from a €20 billion pot for carrying out work in four areas. These include student housing and facilities to support innovation and technology transfer.
