A replacement for Geneviève Fioraso, who resigned as France's secretary of state for higher education and research in March, should be decided in the next few weeks, according to the prime minister Manuel Valls.
In an interview on the radio station France Culture on 13 May, the education minister Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, who has taken over Fioraso’s brief since her departure, said that an appointment was imminent. "No-one should say that we have put research to one side,” she said.
The government and Vallaud-Belkacem in particular have been repeatedly criticised by university leaders and researchers’ unions for their inactivity in appointing a replacement for Fioraso.
