Philippe Baptiste, the chief technology officer for energy company Total, has been confirmed as chief of staff for research minister Frédérique Vidal.
Following speculation that Baptiste, a computer scientist by background, would join the new minister’s team, his role was confirmed on 2 June. Before joining Total in 2016, Baptiste worked at the CNRS, France’s largest public research organisation and at the ministry for higher education and research between 2013 and 2014.
Nicolas Castoldi, deputy director-general for commercial partnerships at the CNRS and another name circulating, has also been confirmed for the team as Baptiste’s deputy. He joins from the CNRS but also spent time as social sciences adviser to Valérie Pécresse, minister for higher education and research under president Nicolas Sarkozy.
