Only French universities will be able to award PhDs for the foreseeable future, research minister Frédérique Vidal has told heads of France’s elite grandes écoles.
Vidal was asked whether the government would relax its policy on grandes écoles at a meeting with the CGE, the representative body for the grandes écoles, on 20 June.
She replied that as PhDs were awarded by the government, they could only be awarded by institutions in which fees were set by government, and which didn’t select students on any other grounds than whether they have passed the baccalaureate exam. Neither is the case for the grandes écoles.
