Thierry Coulhon, former president of the PSL Research University grouping, has been confirmed as French president Emmanuel Macron’s adviser on higher education and research.
Coulhon, who was widely expected to take the role, was among the 45 names listed in a government announcement of senior roles within Macron’s office on 18 June.
Coulhon is a former mathematics professor and worked with Macron on his programme for higher education during the presidential campaign. He is also a former adviser and chief of staff to Valérie Pécresse, the education minister who pushed through reforms that gave universities greater autonomy in 2007. In his manifesto, Macron promised to further extend Pécresse’s reforms.
