The budget for higher education and research is set to increase by €700 million in 2018, Frédérique Vidal, the research minister, has said.

Speaking on France Inter radio station on 14 September, Vidal said that the government’s 2018 budget, which will be presented in full on 27 September, would include €700m more for her ministry than the “original 2017 budget”.

The government is due to reduce the allocation to this year’s research and higher education ministry by €180m. In the interview, Vidal mentioned these cuts but also acknowledged cuts to other ministries’ allocations for research totalling €150m. The additional €150m of cuts were revealed by news website EducPros and newspaper Le Monde in July, but had not previously been acknowledged by the government.
