Former Leru head to lobby for French universities in Brussels

The French government has appointed Alain Beretz, former chairman of the League of European Research Universities, to a role aimed at boosting the prospects of French universities in the EU’s forthcoming university networks initiative.

Prime minister Édouard Philippe announced Beretz’s appointment at a meeting with the CPU, France’s association of university presidents, on 29 August.

The European Universities initiative is intended to be piloted in the current EU budget period before being rolled out fully in 2021-27 as a way of boosting universities’ international competitiveness and increasing student mobility. Philippe said the initiative is critically important to France and that the government intends to set aside €100 million as part of its PIA investment programme to support French universities in joining the networks, the news website EducPros reported.
