Cybersecurity and bioproduction selected as ‘grand challenges’

France’s Innovation Council has set cybersecurity and bioproduction as its latest grand challenges, with each field set to benefit from R&D funding competitions worth €30 million.

The Innovation Council, which oversees the government’s €57-billion Grand Investment Plan for 2018-22, designated topics in the two fields as grand challenges at its third meeting on 17 April.

According to a government statement on 18 April, the central question for the grand challenge in cybersecurity will be “how to automate cybersecurity to make our systems permanently resilient to cyber attacks?” The challenge will be primarily focused on securing systems in businesses, the statement said.
