Research minister Frédérique Vidal has launched a scheme to support France’s PhD candidates and postdocs in building start-up companies from their research.
The scheme, which will open to applicants in July, will be run in partnership with Bpifrance, France’s public investment bank, Vidal told attendees at the final of the My Thesis in 180 Seconds speaking competition on 13 June.
Successful applicants to the “i-PhD” competition will receive a year of mentoring and assistance as they develop their business plans. They will also be given priority access to investment from Bpifrance, Vidal said. The scheme will be backed by an undisclosed sum of money from the government’s PIA investment scheme.
