I have no intention to raise fees, Macron tells students

French president says earlier comments were misinterpreted by political rivals

French president Emmanuel Macron has disavowed a previous statement generally thought to imply that France’s comparatively low university admission fees would be increased, telling students at Ahun Agricultural College in the Creuse department of central France: “I never said that!”

As reported last week in Research Professional News, on 13 January Macron told delegates from the higher education group France Universités (formerly the Conference of University Presidents) that “we will not be able to remain in a system where higher education comes at no cost to almost all students”.
