Senior scientist slams French research performance

Poor ERC performance should mark call to action, says top biologist and parliamentary adviser

Jean-Marc Egly, a research director at Inserm, the national agency for health research, has written a stinging attack on French research policy over the past 20 years, saying that France is now “five years behind in research” compared with its European competitors.

His article, “Research: it’s now or never to take action”, published in the newspaper Le Monde on 25 May, calls for reforms including pay rises for researchers in academia and public research institutes, as well as the recruitment of more outward-looking university presidents.
