French universities’ worst fears of covering pay rises allayed

         

Detailed budget plans show government will fund most of higher salary cost—and boost research

The French government has said it will cover most of the cost for universities and research institutes of pay rises for civil servants it tabled in June.

Detailed budget plans published by the ministry of higher education and research on 27 September, after headline announcements by economy minister Bruno Le Maire, promised funding of €215 million to universities and research institutes to cover the cost of the salary rises in 2024, with this funding to be repeated in years to come.
